Nalanda was a renowned Mahavihara (Buddhist monastic university) in ancient Magadha. Considered by historians to be the world's first residential university and among the greatest centers of learning in the ancient world, it operated from 427 to 1197 CE. At its peak, the university attracted scholars and students from near and far, including Tibet, China, Korea, and Central Asia.
